Poor defence holding Arsenal back?

August 11, 2011 by   Filed under: Arsenal FC, Premier League, Transfers

It might just be this writer’s nostalgia, and of course the game has changed over the last decade or so. But the repeatedly bad performances of a leaky defence grates someone who can remember that famous, air-tight well-regimented defence that would squeeze the life out of opposition attacks.

Is it any co-incidence that since Tony Adams (if Parlour was the Romford Pele, then surely Adams was the Romford Bobby Moore) left the club, they have only won one title, compared to the four that he won during his playing career for the Gunners.

Now the expansion of the number of European club matches has of course killed to some extent the idea that a player could go through a season playing every match without fail, and that back four didn’t play together all the time either, but the defence was the rock upon which many an Arsenal title has been built, play with all the flair you want, but the aim of the game is to score more goals than your opponents,  having a leaky defence means that Arsenal have to work harder for their wins than they used to.

Those looking at free bets  note how Arsene Wenger was extremely fortunate to inherit a core of a side that contained Seaman, Adams, Keyown, Dixon & Winterburn and that’s before we mention Viera & what’s his name, that Dutch bloke who was quite good.

Whilst Wenger certainly galvanised that side to bigger things, you couldn’t have asked for a better set of players to form a team around.

So has there been any improvement in what’s laughably called the off season (barely 2 months, and that’s in a year without a major international tournament) they’ve won 2 of the 6 games they’ve played since the beginning of July, and none of those wins have been in the last 2 weeks.

It’s not exactly the form you want to take with you into a season when you want to win that first piece of silverware in 6 years.

So what now? Would you place a free bet on silverware this season?

Well Arsene Wenger has been shown a lot of faith, the team isn’t all that bad, having run strongly in 4 competitions for 2/3rds of last season, it’s just that the defence is the Achilles heel that is holding Wenger back as he endeavours to drive the club to become trophy winners again.

The EPl has become more competative and attack minded since they went three points for a win and very few games are the ‘park he bus’ variety, yes clubs come to the big sides (like us) and try to defend but generally most teams play positivly (even Stoke & A Villa) show attacking creation at times.thus the emohasis is now on ‘winning games’ as opposed to drawing, sides like Blackpool,West Brom, Fulham and Everton can all play decent attacking games, but the pressure is not so great on them, AW looks to have set the precedent that attack is the best form of defence and has been rewarded by 60,000 people at every home game, His recent purcheses look to me to say, we will always be a threat on the break so lose the ball to us and we will punish you quickly.
Remember if you out score your opponant then you win the game no matter how many you concede.

He did inherit a great defence, well a great squad. But he didnt inherit the defence of the invincible s. We didnt replace sol campbell, Toure was a great player, but he dwindled after campbell left, it brought a balance. We need a strong centre back, with great positioning. We have fast centre backs, ball playing centre backs, but positionally our centre backs are poor, some of this can b blamed on the full backs (apart from sagna, who is arguably our best defender) and the holding midfielder. The centre backs often have to cover their mistakes. We also lack height. I think we actually need 2 centre backs, in the same mould. I dont understand why squillaci is still there, hes just not good enough, I suppose their just willing to let his contract run, and replace him with bartley next season.

When we dont control the game, we have to have another stratergy, we used to be the best counter attacking team in the world, but we had a reliable defence, and in away games, I personally think song should sit deep in the midfield, he is often caught to far forward, and he should cover the full backs, who are better attcking options anyway, if we can get Dann, then I think that is a step in the right direction, but we also need a left back, and if he plans to use vermaelen as cover for left back, then surely he should buy another centre back, but we also need another holding midfielder, im impressed by frimpong but he needs to play competitive matches, and a season on loan would be much better for his development.

Our attack is obviously in better shape, and I think Gervihno and AOC are great signings, and I think everyone is excited by Miyachi, but we have to cover the loss of fabregas, and Nasri. Hazard and Mata are the names being banded around, either would b excellent signings, but Im dont think Wenger will sign either, they simply cost too much, I cant see him spending 20-25 million on a single player, especially at 20! I think th reality is that we will get a centre back and maybe a single player to replace both nasri and fabregas, as I think that if nasri had stayed, he would have been moved into fabregas postion. I know Nasri still might stay, but it looks increasingly unlikely.

Hi would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with?
I’m looking to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for
something completely unique. P.S My apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!

Hi! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with Search Engine Optimization? I’m trying to get my blog to rank
for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good
results. If you know of any please share. Thanks!
