Arteta confident of good season

August 22, 2012 by   Filed under: Arsenal FC, Premier League, Transfers

Arsenal vice-captain Mikel Arteta has high hopes for the Gunners this season and believes they are looking in good shape to have a successful campaign.

The Spaniard was made vice-captain by Arsene Wenger behind Thomas Vermaelen, who is the new skipper at the Emirates Stadium.

It looks as though Arsenal could still do some business in the transfer window, with a loan move for Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin looking likely.

Also, the highly-rated Yann M’Vila, who has been a long-term target for Wenger could finally make his way to North London.

Football betting pundits will see that his club Rennes are set to be holding out for a £17 million fee though so it all relies on whether the French boss is willing to splash the cash.

With the season now underway and possible new faces arriving at the club, Arteta is confident of a good year.

He said:

“We are looking good. We looked really organised on Saturday, just maybe in the final third we didn’t take the chances we should have done. It will take a while because there have been some new players coming in and we are building a new team.

“We know that our new players can make the difference as well. We will have to give them a chance to settle into a new place.”

It was a fairly frustrating result for the Gunners on Saturday as they drew 0-0 with Sunderland, but with their defensive problems last season, they would have been delighted to have kept a clean sheet.

Should the new players gel quickly then there is no doubt that Wenger’s side do have the squad that is capable of challenging for the Premier League title again.

The first aim though is of course to finish in the top four yet again, something that no matter what personal they have lost over the years – Arsenal have always managed to achieve.

They go up against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday, a ground that doesn’t hold the happiest of memories for the club.

However, if the likes of Arteta put in a good performance and are more clinical in front of goal, they can certainly get their first win of the campaign.
