Arsenal’s move for WC Winner takes a new twist

Arsenal’s attempts to agree on a new contract with German defender Shkodran Mustafi took a new twist following a report from ESPN that the Gunners are not ready to carry on with the deal.

Mustafi’s deal with the North London club expires at the end of the season. And it appeared that the German international may have already decided that he wanted to leave.

According to Football London in October, the British tabloid reported Mustafi rejected a new deal in the summer. And it seems that the former Valencia centre-back claimed that he had told the club he planned to move on when his contract expires. However, ESPN now reports that discussions between both sides have stalled. But they have suggested that Arsenal are still holding out hope that they may be able to convince Mustafi to stay.

It is arguably a surprise that Arsenal are reportedly keen to keep Mustafi. Of course, extending his contract gives them a better chance of recouping something like what they paid for him. According to BBC Sport, he cost £35 million in 2016.

Arsenal play host to Rapid Wien on Thursday Night at the Emirates and the Gunners on machine a sous, at the moment, are prime favourites for a full three points.

But he is not a player who has enjoyed a good time in North London. There have been numerous mistakes during his spell in the side. On Spotrac, it shows that the 28-year-old earns £90,000-a-week. Even if he was willing to agree to a smaller wage, he would still cost the club a considerable amount of money.

And with a number of talented defenders already in the ranks, you could understand if Arsenal fans hoped that any future attempts to agree a new deal with Mustafi come to nothing.
